18th IMPERIA WINTER REGATTA - First racing day for 470s and 420sImperia, 7 December 2007
The opening day of Imperia Winter Regatta
for 470 and 420 classes displayed a cloudy sky and a very light
Northern wind.
Start for all classes was fired at about 2.00 pm with a delay of more
or less two hours after the scheduled time.
The race has been sailed on two different sail area both in front of
Imperia Eastbound and Westbound the entrance of the ancient harbour
of Oneglia.
470 fleet had the same start for male and female sailors; 420 fleet
was divideded into two different divisions.
Seven to eight knots of northerly wind was blowing over the race area
at start but after the first windward leg it began to decrease
forcing the Race Committee to shorten the course at last windward
mark rounding.
In the female 420 group Italian team Wetz/Parladori was the first
along the whole corse but in the end the Spanish team Suria Palop/
Basterra Moyua was the first to cross the finishing line. In the
second and third position some two other Italian teams swopped all
the time: Sciuto/Monaci from Rome were second at the end of the race
right ahead of Di Laghi/Gandolfo.
420 male division showed since the beginning a very exciting
situation: five start procedures had to be signalled (black flag
after the second start) bifore the official start. Three boats kept
the leadership of the fleet from start to finish Italian Gemini/Orrù
from Cagliari (Sardinia) in the first place, Greek Tsokaras/Mogadam
in the second and UK sailors Saxton/De Boltz in the third one.
Winner in 470 class were Bertone/Malagugini, male and Russian Ilienko/
Gaponocih, female
A second race could be sailed finishing with a shortened course:
Slovenian team Hmeljak/Nevecny in the male division, German Wolf/
Hanitzcsh in female one and that is now in the lead after two races.
The leader of the maleresults after two races is Italian team Fossati/
Stoppielli scorino a 5th and a 2nd place.
Tomorrow same schedule starting from 10.30 hrs: the L‚Equipe boats
Main sponsor of IWR is the famous hat company Borsalino: a special
Borsalino prize will be awarded to the winners of 470 class both male
and female.
The IWR is an ISAF Grade 3 event.
